One thing there is no lack of in Bulgaria is places to eat and the variety is gradually expanding. Pizza places, pubs and traditional Bulgarian ‘mehanas’ (taverns) have been joined by bistros and upmarket restaurants serving both national and European cuisine. Sofia and the bigger cities have something to offer every taste – traditional, European, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Mexican, Indian...
With some similarities to the Mediterranean cuisines (all the great veg but less fish), Bulgarian cuisine is diverse, a unique mixture of many styles and foreign influences combined with local spices and cooking styles. You’re bound to be asked whether you like Shopska Salata (salad), the most typical national dish, so just go ahead, look through the lists on this website and select the best place to try out Bulgarian cuisine. After all, you’ll have to be ready for the questions once they start coming!
