Religious Services

The predominant religion in Bulgaria is Eastern Orthodoxy (about 85 per cent of the population). Other religious groups represented in the country include Muslims (about 12 per cent), Catholics (about 0.6 per cent) and Protestants (about 0.5 percent).
During communist times, religious activity was largely suppressed. Despite that fact, Orthodox practices and traditions were preserved.
Bulgaria has numerous churches and monasteries, some of which also act as museums and tourist attractions. Rila Monastery is probably the most well-known religious centre in the country. It is located in the Rila mountains, about two hours south of Sofia, and is a must-see for any visitor to the country.
