Healthcare

All foreigners would be well advised to take out comprehensive health insurance when visiting the country. Although certain countries have a reciprocal agreement with Bulgarian for free emergency care, standards may not be up those you are used to at home.
The Bulgarian healthcare system is undergoing reforms, some of which have been problematic. Bulgarians make monthly contributions to the national health care fund, which, in turn, provides for their treatment. Everyone should now have a GP, who should be their first port of call for any illnesses or complaint. The GP can then refer them to a specialist in a hospital.
A number of private hospitals and clinics have sprung up in most Bulgarian cities in recent years. Fees vary according to the institution. Check out this section for more detailed information on the location and contact information of medical centres in Bulgaria's bigger cities.
For an ambulance call 150, though it might take some time for the medical team to reach you, especially if you live in a bigger city.
